Tag Archives: Men of Distinction

Openly gay Australian comedian Josh Thomas could very well be the face of the modern gay man. His quirky character, hysterically crude yet witty personality, diminutive frame and awkwardly loveable mannerisms are the antithesis of the superficial muscleman image that permeates gay culture. But like most 26 year olds who are exploring their sexuality, Josh has had his fill of interesting experiences from coming out of the closet to dating his first boyfriend which he shares with audiences through his hilarious stand-up comedic routines.

Now the GQ Comedian of the Year Award winner brings his story to America in a 6 episode series entitled “Please Like Me” which Thomas created, wrote, starred in and produced. The laugh-out-loud funny and charming coming-of-age show is based on the actual painfully awkward events of Thomas, who is clearly going through a quarter-life crisis. The series follows him as he heads towards his 21st birthday and, in the span of 24 hours, is dumped by his girlfriend, Claire, realizes he may be gay and moves in with his mother, Rose, who has just attempted suicide.

Although it is a scripted show, Thomas didn’t hesitate to cast his real-life best friend and dog, John, to star alongside him. In another genius move, handsome Australian actor Wade Briggs is cast as Josh’s love interest. Although he may not be gay in real life, Wade Briggs convincingly plays the cool and homosexually adjusted jock Geoffrey. Gay viewers will be pleased to know that there are plenty of opportunities to see Briggs in all his glory and even naked in one episode!

This refreshingly honest series depicts modern gay life for a 20-something in a humorous and realistic way, choosing to focus on family, friendship and love as opposed to sex, drugs and parties, which will resonate with viewers gay and straight alike.

Pivot will launch the series with a binge marathon of all 6 episodes on Thursday August 1st at 8:00pm ET / 7:00pm CT.

Marlon Brando Gay

If you’ve become somewhat jaded like me with modern male celebrities then history is the best place to turn for some enduring examples of true sex symbols. You can keep your Pitts, Efrons and Clooney’s but please leave me with my Brando. Often described as “rock ‘n roll, before anyone knew what rock ‘n roll was”, Marlon Brando earned a bad boy reputation for his public antics. But it was his work in films such as A Streetcar named Desire, The Wild One and later on in his career The Godfather, that cemented Brando as a cultural icon.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 3, 1924, Marlon Brando’s popularity endured for over 60 years. What’s most exciting for The Modern Gay was Brando’s openness about his homosexual experiences, stating in an interview in 1976, “Homosexuality is so much in fashion it no longer makes news. Like a large number of men, I, too, have had homosexual experiences and I am not ashamed. I have never paid much attention to what people think about me. But if there is someone who is convinced that Jack Nicholson and I are lovers, may they continue to do so. I find it amusing.”  Over 30 years later I have yet to hear another famous male actor speak so openly about their sexuality let alone about their gay experiences. Brando also supposedly had an affair with James Dean.

Jeremiah Brent, Nate Berkus Modern Gay Couple

Recently engaged interior designer couple, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are in my opinion the world’s most stylish gay couple. The announcement of their engagement in April 2013 caused universal disappointment amongst single gay men throughout the world who were hoping to snatch one of the two for themselves (myself included).

It truly is wonderful to see two talented men who are in the public eye, openly displaying their love and affection for each other (pictures in the gallery below). Although these pictures show a very happy couple, Nate has experienced devastating loss in the past. In 2004 Nate’s partner, photographer Fernando Bengoechea was killed in the Boxing Day Tsunami while the two were holidaying together in Sri Lanka. Nate has publicly spoken about the intense sorrow that he endured for months after his partner’s death.

Outwardly I wish the couple all the best and thank them for their demonstration of what gay, successful, famous, “out” couples can look like. Inwardly, I wish they would break-up and that Jeremiah would come over to my place so we could “redecorate”….

Jason Collins Gay

34 year-old American NBA player, Jason Collins has revealed in an interview with Sports Illustrated that he is gay. Collins is the first active player (he’s played for the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards) from any of the four major US men’s professional sports leagues to publicly come out of the closet.

“I’m black. And I’m gay. I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation,” Collins said. “If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.”

Collins has now become a role model for gay youth not just in America but throughout the world. Hopefully his bravery will be an inspiration for other closeted athletes to publicly come out and show young gay boys that being gay need not affect your life or your career. As I’ve always said, the world needs more positive gay roles models like Jason Collins (read Rule No.2).

Adam Scott Modern Gay Guide

He may not play for our team, or any team for that matter (being a golfer) but Adam Scott has certainly made the sport that much more exciting. Today, the 32 year old became the first Australian to win the US Masters when he defeated 2009 champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina.

His good looks and athletic ability have certainly made me interested in golf for the first time since I was given golf clubs for my bar mitzvah when I was 13 years old.

Sir Elton John is perhaps one of the greatest living performers of our times. Beyond the talent, Elton is a generous supporter of HIV and AIDS programs through his charity the Elton John Aids Fund (EJAF). The foundation’s mission is “to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS through innovative HIV prevention programs, to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, and direct treatment, care, and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS” (www.ejaf.org).

I had the great honour of spending the day with Elton John aboard a chartered yacht on Sydney harbour a few months ago. It was the most surreal experience. The breathtaking harbour as a backdrop and a day with Sir Elton, his son and a small circle of friends. We spoke about music and Australia while I sipped on champagne and Elton sipped on Diet Coke. Although the media like to exploit Elton’s “diva” antics, in person he was absolutely charming, friendly and a doting father to his adorable son Zachary.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford is the personification of style. He embodies all the qualities of a modern gentleman; good manners, well groomed and intelligent creativity, all with a sexy overtone.

Who do would you nominate as a Man of Distinction?
